THE MERTZ HOME PAGE

Why, you ask, would anyone want to make a home page dedicated to one's last name?? What is the point of it, anyway? Well, the idea came to me while surfing one night (the WWW that is) and searched for the name Mertz. I was surprised by the number of links and references to the name I found. It is NOT that common a name and the more I delved into who these people were I decided that Mertz's are NOT common people, by and large. So, I went to work and compiled all of the information I could find, bookmarked all the home pages and made a list of e-mail addresses.

So, here it is, like it or not. If there is one thing I have learned in surfing the web, it is that one does not have to have message or anything to publish on the web. Enjoy this page, even if your name is NOT Mertz.

What is the origin of the name Mertz? As far as I can tell, this name, along with other names like it, can be linked back to the Roman God of War, Mars. I find this especially appropriate in the case of my brother and I. Lance is a name for a weapon. Monty is short for Montgomery, a famous general and his middle name is Grant, another General. My middle name, Kenneth means strong, I think… Anyway, just a note about the name. E-mail me if you have any other information on the name itself.

A note about the information on this page. It has no particular order to it. I have NOT included e-mail addresses of these people, since you can e-mail most all of them right from their pages! An e-mail directory, built with tables or even frames will follow. You can also just look all the Mertz's e-mail addresses up at here:

A man all of us can be proud of:

Albrecht Ritter Mertz von Quirnheim(25.3.1905 - 20.7.1944)

In 1923 Mertz began his education as a regular Army officer where he became a friend of Claus Schenk Graf van Stauffenberg while attending the Military Academy in Berlin.  After operations in Poland and Frence Mertz was sent to Winniza on the Eastern Front where he works with Stauffenberg until Stauffenberg is transferred to North Africa.  In the winter of 1942/43 Mertz was present at the defeat at Stalingrad.  He was married in 1942 to Hilde Baier.  In June 1944 Mertz succeeded Stauffengerg as Chief of Staff to General Friedrich Olbricht. Meanwhile he is part of Stauffenberg's close circle of friends and takes an active part in the preparations of operation "Walküre", the daring plan to overthrow Hitler.  Late on the evening of July 20, 1944, Mertz, who tries to make the military overthrow of Hitler a success to the very end, was shot, along with Olbricht and Werner von Haeften in the courtyard of the Bendlerblack, the headquarters of the conspirators.

More background:

The Attempt on Hitler's Life

Assassination plans repeatedly fail in 1943 and close co-conspirators such as Adolf Reichwein and Julius Leber are arrested in the summer of 1944. Despite his serious wounds and his key role in Berlin, Stauffenberg decides early in July of 1944 to attempt the assassination of Hitler himself. On July 20, he successfully smuggles a bomb into the "Wolf's Lair", the Führer's closely guarded headquarters near Rastenburg in East Prussia, and detonates it during a briefing. After he returns to Berlin, Stauffenberg at first does not believe reports that Hitler has survived. Together with his friend Albrecht Ritter Mertz von Quirnheim, he feverishly attempts to persuade senior officers to support the coup. Late that evening, he is forced to acknowledge that the assassination attempt has failed. That same night, Stauffenberg, his adjutant Werner von Haeften, Mertz von Quirnheim, and Olbricht are summarily executed as the principal guilty parties in the assassination attempt. Beck is forced to commit suicide. Tresckow takes his own life on the eastern front shortly thereafter.

I would like to thank Frank Mertz of Germany for his aid in translating this from the original German.

William Lee Mertz (1920-1993), a former Federal Highway Administration Association Administrator

He played a leading role in developing and planning the Interstate system of highways in the United States. Mertz started his career as a highway engineer with the Bureau of Public Roads in the Department of Commerce. As a field engineer, Mertz worked on many interesting and important transportation projects. He took part in the 1955 Road Test in Ottawa, Illinois, where the basic designs for Interstate pavements were developed. Mertz was assigned in 1956 to the Bureau of Standards to develop standards for computer software for use in highway engineering applications. During the 1960s he worked with such groups as the National Capital Transit Agency in Washington, D.C. and the Tri-State Transportation Commission in New York. He also served as an administrator in the planning of the Interstate Highway System, including the Beltway and I-95 in Maryland and the Washington Metrorail System. In 1969 Mertz returned to the Federal Highway Administration as Chief of the Urban Planning Division and developed transportation planning studies in all 213 metropolitan areas of the nation.

After he left the Federal Highway Administration, Mertz took it upon himself to assemble documents and materials that were important in the development of the Interstate system, and more generally to the development of highways and urban transportation policy. With his characteristic energy, he compiled a substantial archive of valuable materials for research. In 1994, after his passing, his family generously donated these materials to Special Collections & Archives at George Mason University to form the foundation for the William L. Mertz Collection
